Devices & Installation

An OBD II tracker plugs directly into the On-Board Diagnostics port found on all passenger vehicles manufactured after 1996 in North America. The port is typically located under the dashboard on the driver's side. No wiring, cutting or professional installation is required – it takes seconds to install and is ready to track immediately.

Because it draws power from the vehicle, there is no battery to charge. The tracker is active whenever the vehicle's ignition is on and enters a low-power standby mode when the ignition is off.

Tip: If a discreet installation is preferred, an OBD II tracker can still be hidden under the dashboard by using an OBD II “Y” splitter cable – one end stays plugged into the vehicle's OBD II port, and the tracker plugs into the other end, tucked out of sight.

A wired tracker is permanently connected to the vehicle's power supply. It is suitable for heavy equipment, commercial vehicles without an OBD II port, trailers, assets requiring a concealed installation, or any application where a plug-in device is not practical.

Professional installation is required. EAGLE GPS provides installation service in the Edmonton, Alberta area. Optional accessories such as starter-disable relays can be integrated during installation.

The OBD II tracker is the right choice for most passenger cars, vans and light trucks. It is quick to deploy, easy to move between vehicles and requires no installation cost.

The wired tracker is the better choice for heavy equipment (excavators, skid steers, forklifts), vehicles without an OBD II port, assets where you prefer a concealed device, or situations where the device should remain in place permanently regardless of who drives the vehicle.

OBD II trackers require no installation – simply plug into the OBD II port and your tracker is ready to use. Wired trackers require professional installation to connect to vehicle power, and optionally to additional circuits for features like starter-disable.

EAGLE GPS offers professional installation in the Edmonton area. Contact us to arrange a booking.

No. Every EAGLE GPS tracker ships fully configured and tested, with an activated SIM card already installed. Simply plug it in (OBD II) or have it wired in, and it will begin reporting to your account immediately. There is no SIM card to activate, no APN settings to configure and no additional fee beyond the initial hardware/setup cost.

OBD II trackers can be unplugged and moved to any compatible vehicle at any time. The platform allows you to reassign a device to a different vehicle within your account.

Wired trackers are permanently installed and are not intended to be moved between vehicles without a reinstallation.

The most common accessory is the starter-disable relay – a hardware add-on wired into the vehicle's ignition circuit that allows you to remotely prevent the engine from starting. It is commonly used for theft prevention, fleet enforcement and asset recovery.

Coverage & Connectivity

Yes. All EAGLE GPS trackers ship with activated SIM cards that cover both Canada and the United States. No roaming fees or plan changes are required when a vehicle crosses the border.

EAGLE GPS operates over cellular networks. Coverage is excellent in urban and suburban areas and along most major highways. In very remote areas where cellular service is unavailable, the tracker will continue to log position data locally and upload it once connectivity is restored.

All EAGLE GPS trackers are equipped with a multi-network SIM card that automatically switches to the strongest available carrier signal at any given location. Rather than being locked to a single network, the SIM continuously evaluates available networks and connects to the one offering the best coverage – ensuring reliable, uninterrupted tracking whether your vehicles are in the city, on the highway, or in rural areas.

GPS signals from satellites can be weakened or blocked by buildings, underground structures and dense cover. In such environments, the tracker may temporarily lose GPS fix and report the last known position until a clear signal is regained. In most practical fleet and vehicle tracking scenarios – roads, parking lots, job sites – signal quality is reliable.

Plans & Pricing

EAGLE GPS pricing has two components:

  • One-time hardware & SIM activation fee – covers the physical GPS tracker device and SIM card activation. There are no ongoing hardware payments.
  • Monthly service fee (data plan) – covers cellular data transmission, cloud hosting and full platform access. Plans vary by update frequency and features.

There are no hidden fees. Basic technical support is included at no additional cost. Access to the mobile app (Android & iOS) is also included – no extra charge – and uses the same username and password as the web platform.

Platform Features

Location can be updated as frequently as every 10 seconds. The update frequency is determined by your chosen data plan. Higher-frequency plans are ideal for active fleet management; lower-frequency plans work well for basic location checks and asset monitoring.

EAGLE GPS sends email alerts for the following events:

  • Harsh braking, harsh acceleration and harsh cornering
  • Overspeeding (configurable speed threshold)
  • Excessive idling
  • Towing detection
  • Ignition on and ignition off
  • Low power and power lost
  • Impact / shock detection
  • Geofence entry and exit

Alert thresholds and notification recipients are configurable within your account.

Geofencing lets you draw a virtual boundary on the map – around a job site, customer location, neighbourhood, parking lot or any other area – and receive an alert the moment a vehicle enters or exits that boundary. You can create multiple geofences and assign them to specific vehicles or your entire fleet.

The EAGLE GPS platform generates detailed telematics reports including:

  • Travel history (route replay with timestamps, distance and speed)
  • Driver behaviour (harsh events, speeding incidents)
  • Idling summary
  • Ignition and activity summary

Reports can be generated on demand or scheduled to be emailed automatically as PDF at a frequency you choose.

Yes. The live map displays all vehicles in your fleet simultaneously. You can monitor individual vehicles or your entire fleet in real time from any browser or the mobile app.

One full year of location and trip history is kept active and immediately accessible at any time. Data older than one year is archived but can be restored upon request – simply contact our support team and we will retrieve the records you need.

A starter-disable relay is a hardware add-on installed on a wired tracker that allows you to remotely prevent the vehicle's engine from starting. This is commonly used for theft prevention, fleet management enforcement or recovery situations. The relay is wired into the vehicle's ignition circuit during installation.

Mobile App

Yes. EAGLE GPS Mobile is available for Android and iOS devices. It provides access to the core tracking features of the web platform, including the live map and vehicle status, using the same username and password as your web account. The app is free – no additional charge beyond your existing plan.

Virtual Tracker is an optional add-on that turns a mobile device (smartphone or tablet) into a GPS tracker. It is designed for tracking personnel in situations where a hardware tracker is not practical – for example, field service technicians or delivery drivers using their own phones.

The device owner is always in full control and can start or stop location transmission at any time. Data transmitted (subject to device capabilities and permissions) includes device ID, user ID, latitude, longitude, altitude, heading, speed and timestamp.

Data & Privacy

All customer data is hosted in dedicated, secure Canadian data centres. Your data never leaves Canada. This makes EAGLE GPS well-suited for organizations with Canadian data residency requirements.

No. Your tracking data is not shared with or sold to third parties. Please refer to our full Privacy Policy for complete details on data collection, storage and use.

Only users you have authorized within your EAGLE GPS account can access your tracking data. Account administrators can control user permissions and access levels. EAGLE GPS support staff may access data only when necessary to provide technical assistance, in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
